This is a newsletter where you get three perception-altering ideas every Saturday that help you become a better person.
And these insights don’t come from random “deep quotes” searches on the Web, mind you, but from (mostly) books, podcasts, articles, videos. And I share only what I find helpful. So, please share with your loved ones, if you find this stuff valuable.
Here are this week’s insights:
1. Unbecoming
She [Florence Nightingale] was torn—did she want permission to follow her dream, or permission to leave it unfulfilled? “My dear Miss Florance,” [Julia Ward] Howe answered, “it would be unusual [to devote her life to works of charity in hospitals], and in England whatever is unusual is thought to be unsuitable; but I say to you ‘go forward,’ if you have a vocation for that way of life, act up to your inspiration and you will find there is never anything unbecoming or unladylike in doing your duty for the good of others. Choose, go on with it, wherever it may lead you.”
Care about public opinion and you will never do anything worthwhile. And if you do want to do something good, you must stop thinking about what others would think if you do what you want.
2. Believe you can
Of course, just because you think you can do something doesn’t mean you can. But if you don’t believe you can do something, if you’re afraid of it, it’s very unlikely that you will be able to do it. Whether that’s walking again or inventing something—if you decide it can’t be done, it’s not happening. Not by you, anyway.
Attempting something does not promise success.
But giving up means failure.
3. Elves & Orcs
You meet a person in one town, and they don’t treat you well. Then you meet another person from the same town and they behave just as badly. Like that you meet many people in that town and they all act viciously.
Ergo, you assume that every person living there must be bad.
But you could never be more wrong.
It’s a fallacy to think every elf is good and every orc is bad.
And if anything, it’s a sign of your limited ability to reason.
